HEARD PhD Scholarships 2023

The University of KwaZulu-Natal's Health Economics and HIV/AIDS Research Division (HEARD) is a regional and international leader in applied research and policy creation on important health and development issues facing the African continent. HEARD aims to better address Africa's health and development challenges by promoting evidence-based policies and best practices that will help the continent achieve sustainable development and excellent health. Developing African academics to become proficient in quantitative and qualitative research methodologies for comprehending policy challenges and formulating, assessing, and executing policy or programmatic solutions is essential to fulfilling HEARD's purpose.

Eligibility for HEARD PhD Scholarships:

• A master's degree (first or upper second class pass, or its equivalent) is required of applicants.
• The candidate must have evidence of prior research experience.
• The applicant must commit to enrolling full-time at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) for a PhD dissertation.
• After graduating, the candidate must pledge to spend at least two years on the African continent.

All eligible candidates must apply online to be considered for the scholarship. The application should include the following components:

• A letter of motivation
• Curriculum Vitae
• A concept note spanning 8 to 10 pages focusing on a primary strategic focus of HEARD: Healthcare for Mothers and Children; Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights, Adolescents and Youth; Financing Healthcare for All and Achieving Universal Health Coverage
• Certified copies of both the academic qualifications and the full academic records
• Certified copy of the ID/passport
• Two letters of reference

Value of the Scholarship:

Each scholarship is worth R540,000, which covers living, travel, and accommodation expenses.
