The Lyra McKee Bursary is an annual funding opportunity offered by the Press Council of Ireland and the Office of the Press Ombudsman. Named after the late journalist Lyra McKee, the bursary aims to support postgraduate students pursuing a Master’s Degree in Journalism at one of four participating Irish universities, including the University of Galway. The bursary, valued at EUR 3,000, provides financial assistance to deserving students who aspire to enter the field of journalism.
Eligibility Criteria:
- Applicants must be postgraduate students intending to pursue a Master’s Degree in Journalism at one of the participating Irish universities: University of Galway, Dublin City University, University of Limerick, or Technological University Dublin.
- Applicants must show that they would not be able to afford the program without financial assistance, either by qualifying for a SUSI Maintenance Grant or providing alternative evidence.
- Applicant should be admitted to a recognized postgraduate journalism program at one of the participating institutions.
- Applicant should show a strong commitment to journalism demonstrated through the academic record, extracurricular activities, or work experience.
Value of the Scholarship:
The bursary offers a total of EUR 3,000, with EUR 1,500 contributed by the Press Council of Ireland and the Office of the Press Ombudsman, and an additional EUR 1,500 from the university where the student has been accepted into the Master’s Degree in Journalism program.
Application Process:
- Write a 500-word personal statement explaining your motivation for pursuing a Master’s Degree in Journalism and how the bursary will help achieve your career goals.
- Provide one sample of writing (400-500 words), published or unpublished.
- Include a one-page CV and two letters of recommendation from relevant referees.
- Submit applications by email to the Office of the Press Ombudsman by July 12, 2023.
