Dr John Birch Music Scholarship is offered in honour of the much-loved former music lecturer and organist, Dr John Birch (1929-2012). The aim of these scholarships is to support talented musicians to continue to develop and perform while studying at Sussex. This scholarship is open to all current undergraduate and postgraduate students at Sussex, whether or not they are studying Music. Scholars should apply as early as possible, as participation in the musical life of the Sussex campus is an essential component of the scholarship.


  • Applicant must have obtained Grade 8 or equivalent in organ playing.
  • Candidate must be an applicant or current student at the University of Sussex.

Value of the scholarship:

The scholarship is worth £800, paid in two installments of £400. In addition, scholars will receive access to the Media Film and Music (MFM) practice rooms.
