The Department of Biology, Faculty of Science, at the University of Copenhagen (UCPH) is offering a PhD position in Terrestrial Ecology on moss-cyanobacteria associations commencing in March.
Project Description:
The successful applicant will be based at the Ecosystem Ecology group, Terrestrial Ecology Section, thereby joining a lively research environment covering a wide range of topics such as plant ecophysiology, biogeochemistry, diversity, soil biology and ecosystem-atmosphere interactions.
Aims of this project:
(1) identify the effects of abiotic factors (i.e. moisture availability, temperature) on moss-associated nitrogen (N2) fixation in contrasting ecosystems -boreal and tropical forests.
(2) of this project is to determine the nutrient exchange, and thereby the nature of the relationship moss and colonizing cyanobacteria share using nanoSIMS.
Eligibility criteria for the University of Copenhagen PhD position in Terrestrial Ecology, 2021:
- Applicants from all nationalities are eligible.
- Applicants should hold a MSc degree or equivalent in biology, ecology, microbial ecology, molecular biology, biogeochemistry or a closely related field.
- Applicants must be highly motivated and ambitious individual with good interpersonal and communication skills.
- Fluency in spoken and written English is a requirement.
- Previous experience in collecting of and working with live plant material; stable isotope tracking; microbiology; molecular biology techniques such as DNA extraction and DNA sequencing; cell biological techniques such as fluorescence microscopy will be considered a plus.

Value of the University of Copenhagen PhD position in Terrestrial Ecology, 2021:
Successful applicants will receive a starting salary is currently at a minimum DKK 331,125 (approx. €43,750) including annual supplement (+ pension up to DKK 53,811). Negotiation for salary supplement is possible.
