The Ph.D. candidate will play a key role in the Centre's active interdisciplinary and international research team as well as its thematic strand on cross-cultural concepts of trauma and resilience. In various cultural and political contexts, this strand focuses on the psychiatric and cultural vocabularies of trauma. It aims to offer a comparative historical analysis of how concepts of trauma, PTSD, resilience, and recovery have been applied and translated outside the Western world, and how universalizing psychiatric discourses of trauma interacted with broader cultural, literary and artistic narratives of emotional suffering and victimhood.
The chosen applicant will be required to collaborate with the research team at the Centre as well as operate independently. They should be MA-degree holders in anthropology, history, literature (including modern languages), or the humanities in medicine. They ought to have a keen interest in learning more about historical trauma studies and in investigating perspectives on psychological pain and psychological discomfort that go beyond Western scientific paradigms.
In addition to writing a Ph.D. dissertation on how mental anguish, healing, and resilience could be imagined in various cultural and political contexts.
