The Emmerson Family Medical Scholarship was founded in 2021 by Mrs. Alanna Emmerson and Professor Brett Emmerson AM. Professor Emmerson graduated from UQ's medical program in 1979. This yearly award was founded by him and his wife Alanna to help the next generation of medical students get over financial barriers and fulfill their dreams of becoming doctors. Since 1997, Professor Emmerson, a psychiatrist, has served as the Executive Director for Mental Health Services. From 1991 until 1994, he served as Queensland's first chief psychiatrist.
Eligibility for Emmerson Family Medical Scholarship:
- The applicant must be enrolled full-time in the first year of the medical program.
- The applicant must be able to prove their financial difficulties.
- The candidate should not be awarded another scholarship that the dean deems similar.
Application Process:
Applicants should use the Student Hub application form to apply (student login required). A 250-word or less personal statement that outlines the following must be submitted:
- Your background and circumstances
- Your financial need
- Your attempts to mitigate or overcome your difficulties
- How the scholarship will assist you in the completion of the Doctor of Medicine?
Selection Criteria:
- Demonstrated financial need
- Academic achievement undertaken to date in the Doctor of Medicine
- Strength of your statement demonstrating how the scholarship will assist the completion of the Doctor of Medicine
- Any other matter the selection committee considers relevant to your future success in your study.
