Woeppel Research Initiative in Mathematics

The Woeppel Research Initiative in Mathematics was established in 2014 by Dr. James J. Woeppel (BA ’65) to support undergraduate students pursuing advanced research in Mathematics. This initiative encourages hands-on research experience and the development of strong scientific and mathematical writing skills.

Eligibility Criteria: Applicants must meet the following requirements:

• Be a junior or senior undergraduate student
• Be majoring in Mathematics within the College of Arts & Sciences
• Demonstrate a strong interest in mathematical research
• Submit a research proposal outlining planned summer research activities
• Show willingness to engage in scientific/mathematical writing
• Commit to sharing research findings and/or experiences

Application process: To apply for this initiative, students must:

• Complete the General Scholarship Application
• Submit a Research Proposal, including:
  • Clear description of summer research plans
  • Objectives and expected outcomes of the research
  • Methodology or approach to be used
  • Emphasis on scientific/mathematical writing practice
•  Statement of Commitment: Outline your commitment to:
  • Completing the proposed research
  • Engaging in structured writing throughout the project
  • Sharing findings through reports, presentations, or other formats
• Faculty Reference: Provide a recommendation from a faculty member supporting your research potential and proposal
