Young business leaders and students are given scholarships under the Mansion House Scholarship Scheme (MHSS). Scholarship recipients get funding for their studies, training, and job experience in the UK's financial services industry. The Scheme was started in 1997–1998 while Sir Richard Nichols was mayor. After visiting Vietnam and Thailand, Sir Richard became the first Lord Mayor of the City of London to serve as the Scheme's patron for the whole duration of his mayoralty. He also made the first two awards, designating Mansion House Scholars from those two nations. 2001 saw the Scheme's registration with the Charity Commission. Since its launch, the Scheme has given out 208 scholarships to candidates from 70 countries, 35 of which the OECD classifies as developing.
