Deaf Studies Award at Victoria University of Wellington
The Deaf Studies Award at Victoria University of Wellington supports permanent New Zealand residents who are fluent NZSL users and have been accepted into the Certificate in Deaf Studies. Established in 1997 through a gift from Sir Roy McKenzie, the award aims to help students gain a qualification in teaching New Zealand Sign Language (NZSL).
Eligibility Criteria of Deaf Studies Award:
Applicants must plan to enrol in the Certificate in Deaf Studies at Victoria University of Wellington in the following year. Selection is based on academic potential, dedication to teaching NZSL or contributing to Deaf community development, and, where applicable, financial need.
Selection Criteria:
- Applicants must be New Zealand citizens or permanent residents.
- Applicants must be intending to enrol in the Certificate of Deaf Studies in the following year at Victoria University of Wellington.

Note:
- Recipients must write a letter of thanks to the donor of this scholarship.
- At the end of each year in which the award is held a brief report on academic progress (including course grades) is to be submitted, with a statement of future plans (e.g. returning to year 2 of the programme, or if the Certificate is completed, any relevant employment plans).
