Funds Required by Students To Study in Canada

Students who have been admitted to universities and colleges in Canada are required to deposit their one year’s living expenses in a savings account in a bank based in the country. This account is called a Guaranteed Investment Certificate account. A GIC account is basically a savings account which offers fixed returns to all the eligible candidates over a period of time. This is a compulsory requirement which all students need to fulfil if they plan on pursuing a course under the study direct scheme.

The basic Canada GIC process requires students to deposit a minimum of $10,000 CAD with any of the lenders registered and recognized by the Canadian embassy. Out of the CAD 10,000 deposited by a student for living expenses, The student gets to withdraw up to $2000 as set-up expenses. After that, $667 can be withdrawn every month to cover the student’s other expenses.

Education Loan Disbursement Rules For Canada

Opening a GIC account is a mandatory requirement for all international students who wish to study in Canada under the SDS (Study Direct Scheme) programs recommended by the Canadian government. As this prerequisite has to be fulfilled prior to their student visa process, students who have applied for education loans in India to study in Canada may request their respective lenders for an education loan disbursement before visa, or a pre visa disbursement. Ideally, after having verified their details, lenders are expected to approve of the disbursement and the required living expenses are to be transferred to the respective banks in Canada through a wire transfer. But the reality is different in the case of students who have borrowed an education loan for Canada

In the Canada education loan process, a lot of students find it difficult to convince their lending authorities to approve of an education loan disbursement before visa,  as many of them demand to see a visa before allowing the students to avail an education loan disbursement. This results in the students missing out on important deadlines, thus ruining their chances at a successful visa process. Funds Required by Students To Study in Australia

Students need to arrange for the following funds once they receive confirmation from the particular university and before they apply for a student visa to study in Australia, i.e, in phase 2 of the Australia education loan process:

  • On receiving a confirmation from the respective university, students need to deposit their one semester’s tuition fees to the university account and the health insurance charges.
  • Deposit one year’s living expenses into the student’s savings account.

It is only after the university receives confirmation of payment of the above funds that they issue the CoE (Confirmation of Enrolment). Now students are required to produce this CoE at the time of their visa process.

The Australian embassy requires students to deposit their funds in a certain way. Students need to provide the university account details to which the tuition fees and health insurance funds have to be transferred before the loan amount is disbursed by their respective banks.

On the successful transfer of funds by the bank to the university, students are required to send the payment receipt to their university.  After they receive this receipt, the university issues the CoE, which is required for a student visa to study in Australia.

The student’s living expenses will be disbursed to a savings account in India, with a ‘Hold’. This means that although this transaction will be reflected in their savings account, the students cannot perform any transactions through this account until they start their course
