As Japan's standing in international society rises there is a commensurate increase in other countries' interest in and expectations of Japan. It behooves us to open our society as well as our minds to the world outside and invest greater energy in the promotion of international exchange and mutual understanding. For this purpose, we must become better communicators so as to enable other countries to know us and our culture better, while at the same time deepening our own awareness and appreciation of the rest of the world.
Japan earned considerable ill-feeling during the nineteen-eighties and nineties due to our excessive exports. Toshiba believed that the root of the problem lay in the lack of understanding between this country and the rest of the world. Therefore Toshiba International Foundation was established in 1989 to enhance communication and promote mutual understanding.
In the twenty years that have passed since then, the Foundation has supported a wide variety of projects throughout the world to foster better relations with other countries.
