The Marsden PhD Scholarship supports a PhD research project at Auckland University of Technology (AUT) examining how organisations and their members can maintain constructive relationships amid societal, organisational, and individual changes. The project is funded through the Marsden Fund.

Eligibility Criteria for the Marsden PhD Scholarship at Auckland University of Technology 2026:

  • Applicant must meet all AUT Doctoral Programme entry requirements.
  • Applicant must have an academic and research background in management, organisational psychology, human resource management, Māori studies, Indigenous studies, sociology, or another relevant discipline.
  • Applicant must have qualitative research experience.
  • Applicant must have relevant cultural expertise and a commitment to organisational research applying kaupapa Māori research principles.
  • Applicant must reside in Aotearoa New Zealand or be willing to reside there for the duration of the doctorate.
  • Applicant must commence their PhD studies in 2026, preferably in the May intake.
  • Applicant must gain admission to the AUT doctoral programme.

Application Process for the Marsden PhD Scholarship at Auckland University of Technology 2026:

  • Complete the AUT PhD Scholarship application online.
  • Submit a cover letter of up to one page outlining research experience, motivation, and goals.
  • Submit a CV of up to two pages.
  • Provide academic transcripts and certificates for previous tertiary study completed outside AUT.
  • Submit an expression of interest proposal of up to 1,000 words plus one page of references, covering the proposed topic, rationale, research question, methodology, benefits, and references.
  • Nominate two academic referees through the online application system.

Selection Criteria:

  • Academic record.
  • Previous research experience and publication record, where applicable.
  • Quality of the expression of interest proposal.
  • Referees' statements.
  • Applications are assessed by the project investigators and the Business Faculty Associate Dean Postgraduate. 

Value of the Scholarship:

  • NZD 35,000 per year for up to three years, subject to satisfactory progress.
  • Support for tuition fees at the domestic rate plus the compulsory student services fee.

Notes:

  • The scholarship is tenable for three years, subject to satisfactory progress.
  • The stipend is released only after enrolment in the AUT PhD programme.
  • The recipient must sign an AUT Research Scholarship Contract.
  • The scholarship cannot normally be held with another scholarship without approval.
  • Recipients will not normally be approved to work more than 20 hours per week and must declare their employment.
