The scholarships support doctoral candidates undertaking a scientific research project aimed at completing their dissertation in a subject or doctoral field represented by the faculty. Eligibility Criteria for the Dissertation Scholarships at the University of Klagenfurt 2026:

  • Applicant must be undertaking a scientific research project aimed at completing a doctoral dissertation in a subject or doctoral field represented by the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Education.
  • Applicant must have a supervision agreement for their doctoral studies at the Faculty of Arts, Humanities, and Education under the outgoing doctoral curriculum; or
  • Applicant must have successfully completed the presentation of their dissertation proposal before the doctoral advisory board under the new doctoral curriculum.
  • Applicant must not hold a permanent position with the Austrian federal government.
  • Applicant must not be an employee of the University of Klagenfurt, except for those holding teaching positions at the University.
  • Applicant who is studying full-time will receive preference during the selection process.
  • Applicant must not have previously received the Dissertation Scholarship, as the grant can only be awarded once per person.

Application Process for the Dissertation Scholarships at the University of Klagenfurt 2026:

  • Applicant must prepare the required application documents, including:
    • Current project description of a maximum of 5 pages, excluding the bibliography
    • Timetable for the dissertation project
    • Confirmation of successful completion of the dissertation proposal presentation before the doctoral advisory board using the completed DISS1 form or the supervision agreement under the outgoing doctoral curriculum
    • Curriculum vitae (CV)
    • Letter of recommendation from the doctoral supervisor
  • Applicant must submit the complete application with all required documents within the announced application period.
  • Applicant’s application is assessed by the relevant faculty/selection body based on the scholarship requirements and selection criteria.
  • Applicant who receives the scholarship must comply with the applicable funding requirements throughout the scholarship period.

Value of the Scholarship:

  • The scholarship provides EUR 1,120 per month for 10 months.
  • The total scholarship amount is EUR 11,200.
  • The scholarship payments are scheduled to start in September 2026.
  • Each scholarship recipient is responsible for their own tax treatment and any resulting tax obligations.

  • The Faculty of Arts, Humanities, and Education awards two doctoral scholarships each year.
  • Full-time doctoral candidates receive preference.
  • The scholarship can be awarded only once to each person.
  • A final report of no more than 2 pages must be submitted after the funding period ends.
