This scholarship supports doctoral candidates facing unexpected financial hardship, with priority given to those nearing completion, under examination, or affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Eligibility Criteria of Wellington Doctoral Hardship Scholarship:
Applicants must be currently enrolled in a doctoral programme at Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington.
Selection Criteria:
- Applicants must be currently enrolled and fully registered in a doctoral programme at Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington (exceptions apply for COVID-19-related cases).
- Applicants must not be on suspension and should be living in Wellington, unless affected by COVID-19 circumstances.
Application Process:
- Applicants must book an appointment with a University Student Finance Adviser to discuss their circumstances and complete a budget showing current income and essential expenses.
- They must bring a recent bank statement (showing at least two months of transactions, all balances, and their name and account number) along with any additional financial evidence if required.
- Applicants must also provide their latest six-monthly progress report, and the committee may request further details from their supervisor regarding academic progress.
Award: Dependant on circumstances.

- Applicants should have already used their Student Loan entitlements (if eligible) and explored all other financial support options.
- Preference is given to those nearing completion of their PhD, between thesis submission and library lodgement, or those affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.
- The committee will assess unforeseen academic or professional circumstances impacting study, though student levies and insurance are not considered unforeseen expenses.
