University of Auckland Māori Doctoral Scholarship 2026:
The University of Auckland Māori Doctoral Scholarship supports high-achieving Māori doctoral candidates undertaking approved doctoral study at Waipapa Taumata Rau, University of Auckland. The scholarship aims to encourage and support excellent Māori researchers pursuing doctoral study at the University.
Eligibility Criteria for the University of Auckland Māori Doctoral Scholarship 2026:
- Applicant must be of Māori descent.
- Applicant must be a domestic student, or an international student eligible to pay domestic fees for doctoral enrolment.
- International applicants must be eligible under the PhD Domestic Tuition Fees Policy.
- Applicant must not already hold a doctorate degree.
- Applicant must not have previously received payment for a University of Auckland Doctoral Scholarship.
- Applicant must not already be enrolled in a doctoral programme, except in specified circumstances involving approved or pending transfers or doctoral bridging arrangements.
Application Process for the University of Auckland Māori Doctoral Scholarship 2026:
- No separate scholarship application is required.
- Applicant must indicate in their doctoral programme application that they wish to be considered for the scholarship.
- Applications are considered in four application rounds each academic year, according to the schedule published by the Scholarships Office.
Selection Criteria:
- Applicants must be eligible or conditionally eligible for admission to the doctoral programme.
- Eligible applicants with a New Zealand university qualifying programme and GPA of 7.0 or higher will be recommended for the scholarship.
- Where resources permit, a central advisory committee may also consider applicants with a New Zealand university qualifying programme GPA below 7.0.
- The scholarship is granted by the Vice-Chancellor following a recommendation from the PVC GGR or an authorised central advisory committee.
Value of the Scholarship:
- For full-time study in a PhD, DMedSc, DClinPsy or DocFA, the scholarship provides:
- NZD 35,468 per annum in 2026, pro-rated in the first year according to the start date.
- Stipend support for up to 42 months of full-time equivalent enrolment, with annual CPI adjustments.
- Student Services Fee and compulsory tuition fees for prescribed doctoral study.
- For eligible international students, the compulsory single-student health insurance charge.
- For DHSc or EdD programmes with a compulsory part-time coursework component:
- Student Services Fee and compulsory tuition fees for the 120-point coursework component.
- NZD 35,468 per annum stipend for the thesis component, pro-rated where applicable, for up to 24 months of full-time equivalent enrolment.
- Student Services Fee and compulsory tuition fees for the thesis component.
- For part-time study, the stipend is paid pro rata according to the applicable enrolment period.
Notes:
- Obtain unconditional doctoral enrolment within four months of the scholarship award or admission eligibility.
- Remain eligible for domestic doctoral tuition fees.
- Undertake no more than 750 hours of additional paid work per 12 months.
- Do not hold the scholarship with another prohibited scholarship or grant.
- Obtain Director approval for other concurrent funding.
