John Tapiata Scholarship at Auckland University of Technology 2027:

The John Tapiata Scholarship was established in 1992 to recognise the contribution of John Tapiata, the first Tumuaki of Te Ara Poutama, and his passion for excellence and Te Reo Māori. The scholarship supports eligible students pursuing study within Te Ara Poutama at Auckland University of Technology (AUT).

Eligibility Criteria for the John Tapiata Scholarship at Auckland University of Technology 2027:

• Applicant must have been accepted for full-time study in a certificate, diploma, undergraduate, or postgraduate degree programme within Te Ara Poutama.
• Applicant must be a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident.
• Applicant must obtain a referee's statement supporting their leadership ability from a community leader, group, organisation, or school. 

Application Process for the John Tapiata Scholarship at Auckland University of Technology 2027:

• Apply through the AUT online scholarship application system, which will be available from July of the year of application.
• Upload an official transcript of academic results for the current and preceding year, unless the study was completed at AUT.
• Submit a 1,000-word typed essay in Te Reo Māori outlining career paths, future goals, educational aspirations, and leadership capability.
• Nominate one referee through the online system who can provide a statement supporting the applicant's leadership ability.

Selection Criteria:

• Applications will be assessed by a selection panel comprising representatives from Te Ara Poutama, selected by the Dean/Tumuaki.
• The scholarship may not be awarded if the panel considers that no applicant is of sufficient merit. 

Value of the Scholarship:

• One new scholarship is awarded annually.
• NZD 8,000 contribution towards tuition fees for one year of full-time study at AUT.
• Students studying part-time or taking papers outside Te Ara Poutama may receive a reduced pro-rata contribution for eligible Te Ara Poutama papers.

Conditions of Acceptance:

• The scholarship cannot be held together with another AUT scholarship.
• The recipient may hold external non-tuition fee scholarships.
• Recipients are expected to:
  • Successfully pass all courses.
  • Engage regularly with Te Pou Māori support services.
  • Support Te Ara Poutama recruitment and marketing activities when required.
  • Engage regularly with their designated Te Pou Āwhina, including Orientation and other key activities.
• The Scholarships Office, in consultation with Te Ara Poutama, may terminate or suspend the scholarship if the recipient's academic progress is unsatisfactory.

Notes:

• The scholarship is tenable for one year.
• Current recipients may apply for renewal for up to a maximum of three years, subject to submitting a new application by the annual closing date.
• Supporting attachments and the reference statement are not required when applying for renewal.
