This project will develop new technology to integrate thermochemical energy storage via a ‘thermal battery’ into a Stirling dish system. Specifically, the energy-intensive gas-solid reactions between hydrogen or carbon dioxide in metals and oxides will be exploited to store and harness thermal energy. The aim is to investigate high temperature (> 600 °C) hydrogen absorption in metals (e.g. calcium hydride) and carbon dioxide absorption in metal oxides and silicates (e.g. magnesium oxide, calcium oxide, strontium oxide, and barium oxide) to develop the next generation thermal energy storage (TES) system.
