  • Hugh le May Fellowship, 2019 is open to senior scholars who wish to pursue advanced study at Rhodes University.
  • The fellowship will be awarded to a fellow of another discipline within Faculty of Humanities if there is no applicant with sufficient merit in one of the disciplines: Philosophy, Classics, Ancient, Medieval or Modern History, Classical, Biblical, Medieval or Modern Languages, Political Theory, Law.
  • The duration of Hugh le May Fellowship, 2018 may be extended subject to availability of funds by mutual agreement.
  • The successful recipients of the fellowship are expected to reside in Grahamstown between 1 January 2019 and 31 December 2020.
  • At the end of the fellowships, fellows must present a report on the work taken up. 
  • In all the publications originating during the fellowship, the fellows must acknowledge Rhodes University and Hugh le May Fellowship, 2019.

Rhodes University is a public research university located in Grahamstown in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa. It is one of four universities in the province. Established in 1904, Rhodes University is the province's oldest university, and it is the fifth or sixth oldest South African university in continuous operation, being preceded by the University of the Free State (1904), University of Witwatersrand (1896), Stellenbosch University (1866) and the University of Cape Town (1829). Rhodes was founded in 1904 as Rhodes University College, named after Cecil Rhodes, through a grant from the Rhodes Trust. It became a constituent college of the University of South Africa in 1918 before becoming an independent university in 1951.
