Eligibility

  • Applicants for Health Professional Scholarship, 2020 must be a permanent resident of either Australia or New Zealand.
  • Established health professionals and recently graduated health professionals are encouraged to apply for the scholarship.
  • Be involved in any area of cardiovascular health research including biomedical, clinical, public health and health service delivery.Professionals who are general practitioners, clinicians, cardiologists, nurses, physiotherapists, pharmacists, other health professionals and health service managers are also eligible for the Health Professional Scholarship, 2020.
  • Priority is given to health professionals working in cardiovascular healthcare.

Documents Required:

  • Two referee endorsements
  • Evidence of citizenship or permanent residency
  • Evidence of PhD Enrolment or letter from administering Institution.

Applicants will be encouraged to continue their cardiovascular health practice during their PhD, whilst being encouraged to develop evidence-based health practice and research translation. Health professionals who have a strong research background are uniquely placed to champion and lead the translation of research into practice, with the potential to produce immediate health outcomes. A stipend of AUD 40,000 per year will be provided to the student.

The National Heart Foundation of Australia (known as the Heart Foundation) is a charity established in 1959. Its stated vision is for Australians to have the best cardiovascular health in the world and its mission is to reduce suffering and death from heart, stroke and blood vessel disease in Australia. Its activities have been funding cardiovascular research, supporting health professionals in their practice, developing health promotion activities, informing and educating the public, and assisting people with cardiovascular disease. The Heart Foundation claims its work has helped to reduce the number of deaths from cardiovascular disease. Cardiovascular disease (CVD) accounted for nearly 34 per cent of all deaths in 2008. This translates to one person dying from CVD on average every 11 minutes. Heart disease is the leading single cause of death with more than 23,600 Australian lives lost to the disease in 2008. The Heart Foundation has offices in each state and territory.
