International Journalists' Programmes (IJP) offers a bursary to up to six young Southern African (SADC-Member States: Angola, Botswana, Democratic Republic of Congo, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland, United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe + Kenia) and up to five young German journalists for two months the Southern African delegates will have the chance to work in Germany. They will be integrated into the day-to-day journalism of their host newsroom while also researching stories for their home media.

Eligibility for IJP The Southern African Journalists' Bursary in Germany, 2022:

  • Strong command of the English language.
  • German language abilities are an advantage but are not mandatory.
  • Applicants must be Journalists between the age of 25 and 40.

Documents Required:

  • Applicants must enclose a CV with a passport photograph.
  • Write an 800-word essay addressing the following topics:
    • Why you would like to work in Germany?
    • What do you expect from the IJP and what you think you can contribute to it?
    • What are the 3 research topics you want to pursue during the fellowship?
    • What role do you expect to play at your home media in the future?
    • How you will spend the bursary?
  • Include a one-page resume detailing your education and work experience, your standard of German and English (copies of certificates/ e.g. Goethe Institute/Toefel), plus 2 copies of articles written by you (TV and radio journalists must type up their reports since no audio or video tapes can be considered).
  • A journalistic reference from your editor or head of department is required (freelancers should submit a reference from a senior journalist). It should also guarantee your leave of absence for the duration of the program.

The International Journalists' Programmes (IJP) are a non-profit and economically as well as politically independent organisation for the promotion of young journalists. It was established in 1981. IJP are an association, registered in Germany at the local court in Koenigstein near Frankfurt/Main under reg. no. 8 VR 646. IJP are organised decentrally and have no administration. All programmes are organised by the members and board members of IJP, who themselves work as journalists or for media enterprises. The responsibility for the individual programmes lies by the respective coordinators, who belong to the executive committee of IJP. Board members are appointed on a volonteer basis. The executive board is selected by the meeting of the members (30). The core purpose of IJP's bursaries is the international exchange of media talents and opinion makers. For every German journalist taking part in a programme abroad a foreign colleague will work in a German media organisation. Hereby, delegates gain valuable professional and personal experience and impressions. At the same time, they contribute to an overall better representation of Germany abroad and more differentiated reporting within the German media landscape. IJP bursaries are a valuable additional qualification. It is remarkable how many German foreign correspondents are alumni of IJP. Yearly around 120 journalists from 10 regions of the world are awarded an IJP fellowship.
