In 1995, the German-Asian Programme was established at the Federal Foreign Office's initiative during the "Asia-Europe Summit" held in Bangkok. Journalists from Southeast Asian nations, China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and other regions received assistance for a long time. IJP will only grant a fellowship to Japan in recognition of that country's strategic significance in the changing geopolitical landscape and as the host nation of Expo 2026. This curriculum focuses on emerging technologies, environment/energy/climate politics, economics, and geopolitics. Strong proficiency in at least one of these areas is required of applicants.
Eligibility for The German-Asian Programme:
- The applicants must be German and Japanese journalists between the ages of 28 and 45 who frequently work as editors, trainees, or freelancers for Asian or German newspapers, radio or TV stations, or online editorial offices, and are welcome to apply.
- It is assumed that you know English well. German language proficiency is not required.
Application process -
- Applications are open to journalists between the ages of 28 and 40 who work as freelancers, reporters, or editors in Japan.
- German language skills are not a prerequisite for a successful application.
- An excellent working knowledge of English is expected and will be tested during a Zoom meeting before the selection committee makes a final decision.

Award -
- Each scholar will receive a lump sum of Euro 4,200 to cover part of their travel expenses, accommodation, and personal expenses, as well as qualified health insurance for a visit abroad.
- Additional costs are expected to be paid by each fellow personally. There will be no payment for the work at their host media outlet.
