Sanders Memorial Scholarship

The Sanders Memorial Scholarship was established in memory of the late Lt. Commander W. E. Sanders, VC, DSO, RN. Lt. Commander Sanders was granted the Victoria Cross in recognition of his conspicuous gallantry, consummate coolness, and skill in command of one of His Majesty’s ships in action.

Eligibility Criteria for Sanders Memorial Scholarship:

The applicant must:

  • Be the child of someone who served in the Royal Navy, Commonwealth Navy, or Mercantile Marine.
  • Be ordinarily resident in the Auckland Provincial District.
  • Be under 19 years old on February 1st of the award year.
  • Not have attended university previously.
    Intend to enroll full-time in the first year of an undergraduate degree or conjoint degree in the next year.

Selection Criteria for Sanders Memorial Scholarship:

  • Academic Merit: Achieving Level 2 or higher in NCEA or an equivalent qualification.
  • Personal Statement: Assessment of the applicant's study and career aspirations.

Value of Sanders Memorial Scholarship:

One scholarship will be awarded annually for one year, valued at $5,000.
