Ngā Hoe a Kupe Pathfinder Scholarships at Victoria University of Wellington
These scholarships, established in 2020 by Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington, support Māori, Pasifika, refugee, and students from low socio-economic backgrounds who demonstrate resilience and determination. They provide financial assistance, academic support, and first-year accommodation to help recipients succeed throughout their undergraduate degree.
Eligibility Criteria of Ngā Hoe a Kupe Pathfinder Scholarships:
- Applicants must be New Zealand citizens or permanent residents, currently in Year 13 at one of the eight specified schools, and intending to enrol full-time at Te Herenga Waka the following year: Aotea College at Porirua, Bishop Viard College at Porirua, Mana College at Elsdon, Naenae College at Avalon, Porirua College at Cannons Creek, St Bernard's College at Lower Hutt, Taita College at Taita and Wainuiomata High School at Lower Hutt.
- Selection is based on resilience, innovation, overcoming adversity, and a strong commitment to completing a university degree.
Selection Criteria:
- Scholarship offers are conditional on the recipient achieving University Entrance and enrolling full-time in an undergraduate degree programme.
- Recipients must reside in a university hall of residence during their first year to foster a welcoming, safe environment that supports study, personal growth, and well-being.
Application Process: A completed online application must be submitted on the closing date. Late or incomplete applications will not be accepted.
Award: NZD 50,000.
Note:
- Recipients receive comprehensive support during their transition into university and throughout their undergraduate studies, including opportunities to develop leadership, social responsibility, and employability skills through participation in the Wellington Plus Programme and other extracurricular activities.
- The scholarship covers full accommodation costs for the first year and course fees (if applicable) in the first and second years. Eligible recipients continuing full-time with satisfactory academic progress may receive up to NZD 5,000 in year one, NZD 6,000 in year two, and NZD 7,000 in year three for course-related and living expenses.
- A key feature of the Ngā Hoe a Kupe Pathfinder Scholarship is the active partnership between the recipient, their whānau/family/support network, and the University.
