University of Amsterdam is inviting applications for a PhD position in the area of bionanophotonics in the Faculty of Science at Van ‘t Hoff Institute for Molecular Sciences (HIMS). Selection will be based on his/her suitability to the project. The successful candidate will be appointed as PhD candidate in a fixed-term contract. The position is available starting from 1 January 2016. A later starting date (up to 1 March 2016) is also possible.The Van ‘t Hoff Institute for Molecular Sciences (HIMS) is one of eight institutes of the University of Amsterdam Faculty of Science. HIMS performs internationally recognized chemistry and molecular research, curiosity driven as well as application driven. This is done in close cooperation with the chemical, flavour & food, medical and high-tech industries. Research is organised into four themes: Sustainable Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Computational Chemistry and Molecular Photonics. The project ‘ Preclinical intraoperative image-guided surgery and postoperative radiotherapy of tumours’ is a joint project of UvA and Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC) that is funded by the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research under New Chemical Innovations programme. We aim at developing methods of bioorthogonal chemistry on luminescence upconversion nanoplatforms in vivo that will allow image-guided surgery and targeted radiotherapy of cancer.
Eligibility: The candidates must have a MSc degree in chemistry or chemical engineering, with a strong background of organic/inorganic synthetic and biofunctionalization of nanomaterials and excellent communication skills in English. Candidates with proven experience in the areas described above are preferred.
Scholarship value: An educational plan will be drafted that includes attendance of courses and (international) meetings. Based on a full-time appointment (38 hours per week) the gross monthly salary ranges from €2,146 in the first year to €2,744 in the final year, plus 8% holiday allowance and 8,3% end of year bonus according to the Dutch salary scales for PhD candidates.
