Kevin Smith Memorial Scholarship at Victoria University of Wellington

The Kevin Smith Memorial Scholarship, funded by the Friends of Taputeranga Marine Reserve Charitable Trust, was established to honour Kevin Smith’s contributions to New Zealand’s conservation efforts and the creation of the Taputeranga Marine Reserve. It supports students conducting research or thesis studies related to the Marine Reserve at Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington.

Eligibility Criteria of Kevin Smith Memorial Scholarship:

1. Applicants must be enrolled in a postgraduate degree (Master’s or PhD) at Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington.
2. They must intend to conduct research or thesis studies related to the Taputeranga Marine Reserve and its impacts—social, environmental, or economic—across any relevant discipline.

Selection Criteria:

1. Applicants must be enrolled for a postgraduate degree (either PhD or Master level) at Te Herenga Waka–Victoria University of Wellington.
2. Applicants must be undertaking research or thesis studies related to the Marine Reserve and its effects, including its societal, attitudinal and economic impacts.

Application Process: A completed online application must be submitted on the closing date. Late or incomplete applications will not be accepted. 

Award: NZD 1,000.

1. Recipients must write a thank-you letter to the donor, acknowledge the Friends’ support in any related publications, and may be featured in the Trust’s outreach materials or website.
2. The scholarship is awarded based on academic merit and the relevance of the proposed research to the Marine Reserve, with funds usable for any research-related purpose.
