The Japan Award is a prize that aims to motivate young researchers who are involved in research and development in developing regions in the fields of agriculture, forestry, fisheries, and related industries. The recipient must demonstrate exceptional performance and research accomplishments that have the potential to spur future innovation. The Japan International Research Center for Agricultural Sciences (JIRCAS) assists in this prize, which was established in 2007 and is organized by the Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Research Council (AFFRC) and the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF), Japan.

Eligibility for Japan International Award for Young Agricultural Researchers:

Researchers who meet the following requirements can apply: they must be under 40 years old as of January 1, 2026, be employed by a non-Japanese university or research institute, be conducting research and development in developing regions related to agriculture, forestry, fisheries, and related industries, and meet any of the following requirements (Note: Previous applicants who did not receive the award are welcome to reapply):

  • Candidates who have demonstrated exceptional promise and excelled in research and development for a developing region in the fields of forestry, agriculture, fisheries, or associated businesses.
  • Candidates who have exhibited remarkable achievements in research and development that will lead to future technological innovation in agriculture, forestry, fisheries or associated industries for a developing region, and who show significant promise.
  • The finalists should ideally be able to give a lecture and attend the award ceremony, which will take place in Japan.
