    Jack Pearce Research Scholarship in History at Victoria University of Wellington

    The Jack Pearce Research Scholarship in History, established through the Victoria University of Wellington Foundation in memory of Jack Pearce, provides students with the opportunity to gain postgraduate experience in History. It was founded by Jack’s daughter, Brenda Joyce, to support young people in pursuing further education.

    Eligibility Criteria: 

    1. The scholarship is open to Master’s by thesis or PhD students researching History at Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington, including students transferring from other universities.
    2. Both domestic and international students are eligible, with part-time students supported on a pro-rata basis.

    Selection Criteria: 

    1. The scholarship is primarily awarded based on academic merit and the University’s ability to supervise the proposed research, with preference for Master’s by thesis students; PhD applicants may be considered if no suitable Master’s candidates are available, and financial need may be taken into account when applicants are equally qualified.
    2. If no suitable applicant is identified in a given year, the scholarship will not be awarded and the funds will be reinvested.

    Application Process: A completed online application must be submitted by 4.30 pm on the closing date. Late or incomplete applications will not be accepted. Any required supporting documentation (including references) must also be received by 4.30 pm on the closing date in order for the application to be considered.

    Award: NZD 25,000.

    Deadline: 31st October, 2025.

    Note: 

    1. The value of the scholarship is NZD 20,000 to be paid towards tuition fees with the reminder paid directly to the student as a stipend.
    2. Recipients must write a letter of thanks to the donor of this scholarship and submit an end of year progress.
    3. The scholarship may not be held in conjunction with other major postgraduate scholarships.
