Eligibility for the Dr. John N. Nicholson Fellowship:

Applicants must:

  • Be U.S. citizens.
  • Be enrolled in a PhD program at Northwestern University in basic sciences, engineering, or management.
  • Be in their 2nd, 3rd, or 4th year of PhD study at the time of application.
  • Be nominated by their academic program (only one nominee per program).
  • Comply with University assistance regulations if receiving graduate aid.

Application Process:

All eligible candidates nominated by the academic program and invited through email must apply online to be considered for the fellowship. The application should include the following components:

  • Statement of Purpose and Research Description 
  • Curriculum vitae
  • Unofficial Northwestern transcript
  • Letter of recommendation from advisor

Value of the Award:

  • Full tuition payment.
  • 9-month stipend (at the same rate as a University Fellowship).
  • Tenure: One academic year (three quarters). Renewable upon reapplication (up to the 4th PhD year).
