Barbara Finlayson Scholarship for School Leavers at Victoria University at Wellington
This scholarship is awarded annually to first-year violin, viola, or violoncello students at the New Zealand School of Music, supporting them in their transition to university. It was established through a bequest from Barbara Finlayson via the Victoria University of Wellington Foundation, with the first awards granted in 1997.
Eligibility Criteria: Applicants must be violin, viola or violoncello students, intending to enrol at NZSM in the year following their application. The scholarship is available to both domestic and international students.
Selection Criteria: Applicants must be violin, viola, or violoncello students intending to enrol full-time at the NZSM, Victoria University of Wellington, with selection based on academic achievement and demonstrated musical ability.
Application Process: A completed online application must be submitted by 4.30 pm on the closing date. Late or incomplete applications will not be accepted. Any required supporting documentation (including references) must also be received by 4.30 pm on the closing date in order for the application to be considered.
Award: Upto NZD 5,000 (subject to funds available) and may be divided by the committee.
Deadline: 1st October, 2025.
Note:
- Recipients must write a letter of thanks to the donor of this scholarship.
- The scholarship will be paid as a monthly stipend in the recipient's first year of study, subject to confirmation of and continued enrolment.
- The recipient will be expected to demonstrate engagement and contribute to the community and environment of the New Zealand School of Music. This may include but is not limited to, participation in ensembles, presentations, or performances at NZSM or university events.
- The Scholarship cannot be deferred to a later year.
- The Scholarship may be held in conjunction with other awards.
