Barbara Finlayson Scholarship for School Leavers

This scholarship is awarded annually to first-year violin, viola, or violoncello students at the New Zealand School of Music, supporting them in their transition to university. It was established through a bequest from Barbara Finlayson via the Victoria University of Wellington Foundation, with the first awards granted in 1997.

Eligibility Criteria for the Barbara Finlayson Scholarship for School Leavers:

Application Process for the Barbara Finlayson Scholarship for School Leavers:

  • A completed online application must be submitted by 4.30 pm on the closing date.
  • Late or incomplete applications will not be accepted.
  • Any required supporting documentation (including references) must also be received by 4.30 pm on the closing date for the application to be considered.

Award: Up to NZD 5,000 (subject to funds available) and may be divided by the committee.

Note: 

  • Recipients must write a letter of thanks to the donor of this scholarship.
  • The scholarship will be paid as a monthly stipend in the recipient's first year of study, subject to confirmation of and continued enrolment. 
  • The recipient will be expected to demonstrate engagement and contribute to the community and environment of the New Zealand School of Music. This may include but is not limited to, participation in ensembles, presentations, or performances at NZSM or university events.
  • The Scholarship cannot be deferred to a later year.
  • The Scholarship may be held in conjunction with other awards.
