    Research students with an exceptional record of academic achievement and promising research prospects are eligible for this fellowship, which was founded by a donation from Alfred Oscar Capell.

    Eligibility for the A.O. Capell Scholarship:

    • Applicant must be an Australian citizen or permanent resident.
    • Applicants should have applied for and fulfilled the University of Melbourne's graduate research degree admission criteria.
    • Candidates should have not finished a research degree at the same or higher level as the program for which funding is applied.
    • Students should not have already been awarded a graduate research scholarship with comparable advantages.

    Selection criteria:

    Academic excellence is the determining factor for these grants. Candidates who meet the requirements are evaluated based on their research potential in their field of study and the academic standing of their most recent degree. Considerations may include things like relevant work experience, peer-reviewed publications, specialized training in medicine, or creative music creation.

    Benefits:

    • Living expenses for up to two years for students pursuing a Master's by research degree or up to three years for students pursuing a Doctorate will be covered by a living allowance of $42,000 a year pro rata (2024 full-time study rate). Limited paid sick, maternity, and parental leave are included in the living allowance, which may be subject to yearly indexation.
    • Students relocating from other States or Territories than Victoria are eligible for a $2,000 relocation award; those relocating from outside Australia will get a $3,000 grant.

    Application process:

    An application is not necessary. This award will automatically be given to the student if they apply for admission to a graduate research degree by 31 October for commencement in the following year.
