Wilson C. Riles Scholarship
The Wilson C. Riles Scholarship was established in 2003 to honor Superintendent Wilson C. Riles, the first elected African American state superintendent of schools in the United States. This scholarship supports students enrolled in California State University (CSU) teacher credential programs, with a focus on those who demonstrate a strong commitment to education.
Eligibility Requirements
To be eligible for the Wilson C. Riles Scholarship, applicants must meet the following criteria:
Enrollment in a Teacher Credential Program:
- Applicants must be currently enrolled in a teacher credential program at a CSU campus.
- Minimum Enrollment:
- Applicants must be enrolled in at least 6.0 units during the academic year.
Minimum GPA:
- Applicants must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
First-Generation College Student Preference:
- Preference will be given to first-generation college students.
Award Value
Award Amount:
- Three (3) scholarships of $2,500 each will be awarded for the academic year.
Application Process
- The applicants must also surpass all the requirements set by the university.
*Personal Statement:
- Applicants must submit a personal statement (300-word count for each question) answering the following:What experience has impacted your personal growth?
- Tell us about a time you failed. What did you learn from that experience?
- Why are you pursuing your major? How does it relate to your career aspirations?
- Provide an example of service beyond the classroom (i.e., significant family obligations, helping others in specific ways, political action, volunteer/internship experiences, etc.). Why is this example significant to you?
- Letter of Appreciation: If selected, recipients must submit a letter of appreciation addressed to Mr. Philip G. Riles, the son of Superintendent Riles, before fund distribution.
