Eligibility Criteria for Bongani Mayosi-National Health Scholars Programme:

Applicants must:

  • Be a South African citizen or permanent resident.
  • Hold a Master’s degree.
  • Be currently enrolled for a PhD at a South African university (full-time study).
  • Have an approved PhD research proposal.
  • Have ethics approval (or be under ethics review) for the research project.
  • Be conducting research in one of the following priority areas:
    • Health system strengthening (quality, human resources, supply chain)
    • Early detection of non-communicable diseases (diagnosis, surveillance, access)
    • Public health innovation (health promotion, disease prevention, HIV elimination)
  • Be a health professional registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa.

Value of Bongani Mayosi-National Health Scholars Programme:

  • Full PhD funding for the entire degree duration.
  • Scholarship value is equivalent to the net (after-tax) salary of a South African public service professional scale, based on the applicant’s qualification level.
  • Funding is tax-free and intended to support full-time doctoral study.
