About the Scholarship

Research grants are offered to support the work on biological invasions being done by the South African National Biodiversity Institute. Projects that are pertinent to one of SANBI's key areas—risk analysis, taxonomy, eradication planning and coordination, incursion detection and response planning, status report and monitoring—will be taken into consideration.

Eligibility:

  • Candidates must be proactive, enthusiastic, and interested in doing excellent research that will help improve our understanding and management of biological invasions.
  • Open to South African students only 
  • All students must apply to a university themselves, and the bursary is contingent on their acceptance into such a course. 

Value and Duration: Bursaries are to cover living expenses and university fees

  • Honors: R 60,000 p.a +fees
  • Masters: R 115,000 p.a+fees
  • PhD: R 161,000 p.a.+fees

Documents Required:

  • A cover sheet -available on the website
  • One-page project outline for Honours applications or a two-page project outline for Masters and Doctoral applications
  • CV
  • Reference letter
  • A letter of endorsement from a potential academic supervisor;
  • A declaration of support from a SANBI staff member who will serve as a contact or co-supervisor;
  • A certified copy of the academic record
  • Provide a certified copy of your highest degree and ID.
