Robert Bell Travelling Scholarship in Journalism is offered by the University of Canterbury for students who have graduated from the Journalism program at the university. The value of the scholarship is $15,000 for the tenure of one year, for students to travel overseas to research news media and other means of public communication. Preference is given to applicant's whose proposals are likely to benefit New Zealand in particular.

Eligibility:

  • Applicants must have completed the requirements for a qualification in the Journalism program from the University.
  • Applicants must have three years of professional experience in journalism.
  • Applicants must demonstrate how their research during the tenure of the Robert Bell Travelling Scholarship would reach an audience. Applicant must provide an outline of the content that would be published along with a letter of support from their intended media partner/publisher.

The University of Canterbury (Māori: Te Whare Wānanga o Waitaha; postnominal abbreviation Cantuar. or Cant. for Cantuariensis, the Latin name for Canterbury) in Christchurch is New Zealand's second oldest university. It was founded in 1873 as Canterbury College, the first constituent college of the University of New Zealand. Its original campus was in the central city, but in 1961 when it became an independent university it also began moving out of its original neo-gothic buildings, which were re-purposed as the Christchurch Arts Centre.
