The Maharaia Winiata Memorial Prize is given annually for the most outstanding original essay on Māori culture (traditional or contemporary).

Eligibility Criteria for the Maharaia Winiata Memorial Prize at University of Auckland:

- Bachelor of Arts (Honours)
- Postgraduate Diploma in Arts
- Master of Arts
The essay must be presented or published as a result of academic study in the award year.
