MacFarland Scholarship

The MacFarland Scholarship is offered at the College of Professional Studies at Northeastern University's Boston, Seattle, and Charlotte campuses. It provides scholarships for people who demonstrate outstanding academic merit and a commitment to transforming urban education as an educator (MAT/MEd) or a leader (EdD).

Eligibility criteria for the MacFarland Scholarship:

• The scholarship is open to U.S. Citizens or Permanent residents.
• The applicant must work or have the intention of working as an educator in a public school at the elementary or secondary level in an urban area.
• In case of MAT/MEd:
  • The applicant must apply and be admitted to one of the following programs at the College of Professional Studies: Graduate School of Education, Master of Arts in Teaching- Elementary or Secondary Education.
  • Master of Education in Learning and Instruction with ESL Initial licensure in Massachusetts or Special Education with Initial licensure in Massachusetts.
• In case of EdD:
  • The applicant must apply and be admitted to the EdD program at the College of Professional Studies: Graduate School of Education within the following concentrations:
  • Innovative Teaching and Learning.
  • Integrative Studies.
  • Transformative School Leadership.
  • Workplace Learning.
• The applicant must have a cumulative undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or higher.
• The applicant must submit a completed FAFSA
• The applicant must demonstrate their financial need.
• The applicant must submit an essay that articulates (500-1000 words) their career goals and intentions to work with urban and underserved populations within elementary and secondary public education.

Application process for the MacFarland Scholarship:

• The applicant must submit a scholarship application and meet the scholarship criteria to be eligible for the MacFarland Scholarship.
• Selected scholarship recipients will receive a formal letter via email notifying them of the award granted.

Value of the Scholarship:

• A scholarship award of up to $18,700 in the case of MAT/MEd.
• A scholarship award of up to $18,000 in the case of EdD.
