More about Khyentse Foundation

Khyentse Foundation is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the support and enhancement of Buddhist study, practice and scholarship throughout the world. Founded by Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche in 2001, its primary aim is to extend the Buddha’s wisdom and compassion as widely as possible, in order to benefit all beings.

Similarly, this mission to preserve, translate and make freely available the primary teachings of all Buddhist lineages is completely non-sectarian in its approach.

To date, the Foundation has initiated or contributed to numerous projects in thirty countries, directly impacting the lives of thousands of people. These projects include the founding of the Chair of Buddhist studies at the University of California at Berkeley; the digitization of Tibetan Buddhist scriptures in the U.S. and Europe; the funding of traditional monastic colleges in Asia; and a worldwide scholarship program, open to both lay and monastic applicants. Khyentse Foundation also played a pivotal role in establishing 84000: Translating the Words of the Buddha — another nonprofit organization whose visionary, 100-year remit is to translate the entire canon of Buddhist teachings into modern languages.

As it enters its second decade, the Khyentse Foundation expects to significantly expand the scope and scale of its activities, with special emphasis on two major programs:

Nurturing The Source will revitalize Buddhist education in traditionally or formerly Buddhist countries such as India, China, Mongolia, various Eastern European nations, and the Theravadan countries of Southeast Asia.

Training For The Future will establish a critical mass of Buddhist teachers, students and practitioners worldwide, by developing skills in leadership training, youth development, teacher training, and other elementary, secondary and tertiary level Buddhist education programs.

While maintaining a global focus, Khyentse Foundation remains a grassroots organization, operated by an all-volunteer staff and supported by hundreds of donors, many of whom give just a few dollars each month. Like drops of water making up an ocean, the Foundation and its donors combine to support thousands of practitioners, students, and monastics, thereby reestablishing the age-old tradition of Buddhist patronage for contemporary times.
