This fellowship is to support Ph.D. students' advanced study in modern Irish history at the University of Edinburgh to deepen their understanding of Ireland and the many intricate connections that bind Ireland and the UK. It bears Justin Arbuthnott's name, who perished one night in July 1989 along with three companions when their boat overturned off the coast of County Donegal in Ireland. The four were studying at the University of Edinburgh, where they had originally connected and become close to one another, and were all in their early 20s.
Eligibility for Justin Arbuthnott PhD Scholarship in Modern Irish History at the University of Edinburgh:
- Students starting a PhD program in the academic year 2024–2025 from the UK, EU, and other countries are eligible for this prize. The Justin Arbuthnott Ph.D. The scholarship is not available to current Ph.D. students or those enrolling in a distance learning HCA Ph.D. program.
- All excellent submissions about the history of contemporary Ireland or British-Irish relations will be taken into consideration by the scholarly panel.

Value of the Scholarship:
Subject to acceptable progress and tuition fees at the UK or international rate, the award offers an annual stipend at the UKRI rate for three and a half years (for 2024–2025, this has been set at £19,237 pro-rata for part-time students).
