Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme by Research Grants Council 2024-25

Established in 2009 by the Research Grants Council (RGC) of Hong Kong, the Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme (HKPFS) is designed to attract outstanding students worldwide to pursue their PhD studies at Hong Kong's universities.

Eligibility criteria:

• Candidates seeking admission as new full-time PhD students at any of the following eight universities are eligible to apply:
• City University of Hong Kong
• Hong Kong Baptist University
• Lingnan University
• The Chinese University of Hong Kong
• The Education University of Hong Kong
• The Hong Kong Polytechnic University
• The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology
• The University of Hong Kong

• Applicants should demonstrate outstanding qualities in academic performance, research ability/potential, communication and interpersonal skills, and leadership abilities. Eligibility is irrespective of the candidate's country of origin, prior work experience, or ethnic background.

Value of the scholarship:

• The Fellowship provides an annual stipend of HK$331,200 (approximately US$42,460) and a conference and research-related travel allowance of HK$13,800 (approximately US$1,760) per year for each awardee for up to three years.
• The chosen universities may provide additional support for awardees who require more than three years to complete their Ph.D. degree. Applicants are advised to contact the respective universities for details.

Selection Criteria:

• Primary consideration is given to candidates' academic excellence.
• Other factors considered by the Selection Panels include:
• Research ability and potential
• Communication and interpersonal skills
• Leadership abilities
• Applicants are evaluated based on these criteria to determine their suitability for the Fellowship.

Application process: Before submitting applications for PhD admission to their preferred universities, eligible candidates must first submit an Initial Application online through the Hong Kong Ph.D. Fellowship Scheme Electronic System (HKPFSES) to obtain a HKPFS Reference Number by December 1, 2023, at 12:00:00 Hong Kong Time.
