The Westmoreland Scholarship

The Westmoreland Scholarship is aimed at supporting talented teacher candidates and practicing teachers who demonstrate a deep passion for teaching, learning, and a commitment to educating students in high-needs schools. This scholarship recognizes individuals who are dedicated to making a significant impact on the education system, especially by teaching in schools that face various challenges. The scholarship is designed to assist students who aspire to become educators or are already practicing educators, and who show promise and potential in working with diverse student populations.

Eligibility

To qualify for the Westmoreland Scholarship, applicants must meet the following criteria:

Minimum GPA:

• A minimum GPA of 3.5 is required.

Enrollment Requirements:

Applicants must be enrolled at least part-time in an eligible program:

• Undergraduate or credential students must be enrolled in at least 6 units.
• Graduate students must be enrolled in at least 4 units.

Teacher Education Credential Student:

• Applicants must be enrolled in a teacher education credential program.

Financial Need:

• Applicants must qualify for financial aid.Alternatively, applicants can meet this requirement by being a first-generation college student or coming from an underrepresented group in teaching.

Letter of Recommendation:

• Applicants must submit one letter of recommendation from someone who is knowledgeable about the candidate’s work with children.
• This letter should specifically highlight the candidate's strengths or potential strengths in teaching.
• Additionally, the recipient must write a thank you note to the donor expressing appreciation for the scholarship.

• Award Amount: $1,500.00

• This scholarship is available to students within the College of Education, particularly those pursuing teaching credentials or currently working as teachers in high-needs schools.

Application Process:

To apply for the Westmoreland Scholarship, follow these steps:

• Complete the General Application: Start by filling out the General Application, which includes personal information and details about your academic background.

Complete the Supplemental Questions: Provide a one-page narrative that addresses the following:

• How you meet the intentions of the scholarship (your passion and commitment to teaching, especially in high-needs schools).
• The purpose for which you will use the funds (e.g., tuition, educational materials, etc.).
• The anticipated impact of your coursework on your teaching practice and future students.

Submit a Letter of Recommendation:

• Attach one letter of reference from someone who has observed you working in an educational setting and can speak to your strengths as a future educator.

Complete the Conditional Application:

• If prompted, complete any conditional application requirements to be considered for this award.
