The He Manga Tauhokohoko | University of Auckland Business School Dean's Doctoral Scholarship supports excellent domestic and eligible international doctoral candidates in the Faculty of Business and Economics whose research aligns with the University's strategic objectives and one or more of the Business School's four Strategic Research Themes: productivity and sustainability, innovation and value creation, leadership and governance, and internationalisation.
Eligibility Criteria for the He Manga Tauhokohoko | University of Auckland Business School Deans Doctoral Scholarship 2026:
- Applicant must be a domestic student or an international student eligible to pay domestic fees for doctoral enrolment.
- Applicant must have achieved a minimum GPA/GPE of 8.0, or 7.5 for Māori or Pacific candidates, in the qualifying programme used for PhD admission.
- Applicant must undertake research aligned with at least one of the following Strategic Research Themes:
- Productivity and sustainability
- Innovation and value creation
- Leadership and governance
- Internationalisation
- Applicant must not already hold a doctorate degree.
- Applicant must not have previously received payment for a University of Auckland Doctoral Scholarship.
- Applicant must not already be enrolled in a doctoral programme, except in specified circumstances involving approved or pending transfers or doctoral bridging arrangements.
Application Process for the He Manga Tauhokohoko | University of Auckland Business School Deans Doctoral Scholarship 2026:
- No separate scholarship application is required.
- Applicants are automatically considered when applying for a doctoral programme if they indicate in their doctoral application that they wish to be considered for the scholarship.
Selection Criteria:
- Applicants must be eligible or conditionally eligible for admission to the doctoral programme.
- Selection considers:
- Alignment with the strategic objectives of the University.
- Alignment with the strategic objectives of the Faculty of Business and Economics.
- Faculty-specific selection criteria published by the University.
- The scholarship is granted by the Vice-Chancellor following a recommendation from the Selection Committee.
- The Selection Committee comprises:
- Dean of the Faculty of Business and Economics or nominee
- Associate Dean (Postgraduate Research) or nominee
- Associate Dean (Research) or nominee.
Value of the Scholarship:
For full-time PhD study, the scholarship provides:
- NZD 35,468 per annum in 2026, pro-rated in the first year according to the start date.
- Stipend support for up to 42 months of full-time equivalent enrolment, with annual CPI adjustments as determined by the Director.
- Student Services Fee and compulsory tuition fees for prescribed doctoral study.
- For eligible international students, the compulsory single-student health insurance charge.
For part-time PhD study:
- The same components apply, with the stipend paid pro rata for periods of part-time enrolment, up to 42 months of full-time equivalent enrolment.
Conditions of Acceptance:
- The recipient must obtain confirmation of unconditional enrolment in the doctoral programme:
- Within four calendar months for a domestic qualifying programme.
- Within seven months for an international qualifying programme.
- The applicable period is measured from the later of the scholarship award or the date the recipient becomes eligible for admission.
- The recipient must immediately notify the Scholarships Office if undertaking a required or approved internship or placement.
- During a paid internship, the stipend may be suspended or adjusted depending on the recipient's gross internship income.
- The stipend continues during an unpaid internship.
- The scholarship cannot be held concurrently with another University-funded doctoral scholarship.
- It also cannot be held concurrently with a postgraduate scholarship or grant from the Universities New Zealand Scholarships Committee or a foreign government or agency.
