Eligibility Criteria for Full-time research grants:

  • The scholarship program also welcomes applications from musicians enrolled in performance programs, students in the natural sciences and/or engineering with projects involving extensive lab time, and those interested in specific volunteer and service projects requiring substantial on-site commitment.
  • Graduating seniors or recent graduates seeking full-time research and study grants should be aware that competition is highly competitive due to limited slots in this category and the presence of applicants with more advanced academic standing. Hence, they are advised to consider applying for grants combined with English teaching assistantships.
  • Applicants who are not selected for full-time research grants may, at the discretion of Fulbright Austria, be considered for grants combined with teaching assistantships instead.
  • Fulbright Austria assesses project proposals based on their coherence and quality, as well as their potential to foster mutual understanding between Austria and the United States.
  • The program is particularly interested in projects related to Austrian studies and proposals with bilateral or comparative significance that enhance Austrian-American collaboration.
  • Accepted degree levels include Bachelor's, Master's, and Ph.D.
  • Applicants proposing study or research in medicine or veterinary medicine are not eligible for consideration.
  • Proficiency in German at an intermediate level is a requirement for all applicants.
  • This is essential to fulfill the Fulbright Program's mission of promoting mutual understanding, managing daily life, and meeting university admission criteria.
  • While some courses are offered in English, most university courses are taught in German.
  • Therefore, applicants must submit "Form 7: Language Self-Evaluation" and "Form 8: A Foreign Language Evaluation by a qualified language instructor" as part of the application process.
  • The scholarship does not provide support for dependents.

More about Fulbright Program

The Fulbright Program, including the Fulbright-Hays Program, is a program of highly competitive, merit-based grants for international educational exchange for students, scholars, teachers, professionals, scientists and artists, founded by United States Senator J. William Fulbright in 1946. Under the Fulbright Program, competitively selected U.S. citizens may become eligible for scholarships to study, conduct research, or exercise their talents abroad; and citizens of other countries may qualify to do the same in the United States. The Fulbright Program is one of the most prestigious awards programs worldwide, operating in over 155 countries. Fifty-three Fulbright alumni have won Nobel Prizes; seventy-eight have won Pulitzer Prizes. The program was established to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and other countries through the exchange of persons, knowledge, and skills. The Fulbright Program provides 8,000 grants annually to undertake graduate study, advanced research, university lecturing, and classroom teaching. As of 2013, more than 325,400 persons—122,800 from the United States and 202,600 from other countries—have participated in the program since it began. The Fulbright Program is managed by the Institute of International Education and operates in over 155 countries around the world. In each of 50 countries, a bi-national Fulbright Commission administers and oversees the Fulbright Program. In countries without a Fulbright Commission but that have an active program, the Public Affairs Section of the U.S. Embassy oversees the Fulbright Program. The U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs sponsors the Fulbright Program from an annual appropriation from the U.S. Congress. Additional direct and in-kind support comes from partner governments, foundations, corporations, and host institutions both in and outside the U.S.
