The Fred and Helen Hanan Endowed Scholarship in Chinese Studies was established in 2001 by Anneliese and Patrick Hanan in memory of Professor Hanan's parents. The scholarship supports students of exceptional achievement and promise pursuing academic work in Chinese Studies at the University of Auckland.

Eligibility Criteria for the Fred and Helen Hanan Endowed Scholarship in Chinese Studies at University of Auckland 2026:

  • Applicant must be a domestic or international student.
  • Applicant must be enrolled full-time or part-time in one of the following programmes, majoring or specialising in Chinese:
    • Bachelor of Arts (Honours) (BA(Hons))
    • Master of Arts (MA)
    • PhD
  • Applicant must have achieved a minimum GPA/GPE of 6.00, or 5.50 for Māori and Pacific candidates, in the qualifying programme.
  • Applicant must have at least one semester remaining if already enrolled in a BA(Hons) or MA programme at the time of application.
  • Applicant undertaking a PhD must be within 36 months of the full-time equivalent of their doctoral enrolment date, excluding periods of suspension.

Application Process for the Fred and Helen Hanan Endowed Scholarship in Chinese Studies at University of Auckland 2026:

  • Complete and submit the scholarship application form to the Scholarships Office.
  • Applications usually open approximately six weeks before the closing date.

Selection Criteria:

  • Applications are assessed by a Selection Committee.
  • The scholarship is awarded by the University of Auckland Council on the recommendation of the Selection Committee.
  • The Selection Committee comprises:
    • Deputy Head (Academic) of the School of Humanities or nominee
    • Major/Specialisation Leader for Asian Studies or nominee
    • Academic staff member from the Chinese major/specialisation nominated by the Head of School.

Value of the Scholarship:

  • Up to NZD 40,000 per year.
  • Each scholarship has a minimum value of NZD 5,000.
  • The scholarship is awarded for one year.
  • Payment and tenure are pro-rated for part-time study.
  • Awardees may hold the scholarship more than once.

Notes:

  • The scholarship is paid in one instalment upon acceptance of the scholarship.
  • To receive the scholarship, the recipient must remain enrolled full-time or part-time in a BA(Hons), MA, or PhD programme majoring or specialising in Chinese.
  • BA(Hons) and MA students who have already completed one or more semesters may receive a scholarship pro-rated according to their remaining enrolment.
  • PhD students must meet the specified 36-month full-time equivalent enrolment limit at the time of application.
