Overview

The CASVA Paul Mellon And Ailsa Mellon Bruce Visiting Senior Fellowship is awarded to support research in the history, theory, and criticism of the visual arts.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Open to all nationalities.
  • The candidates applying should have held a Ph.D. for five years or more at the time of application.
  • Candidates who possess an equivalent record of professional accomplishment are eligible to apply. 
  • The candidates who are currently affiliated with the National Gallery of Art are not eligible for the visiting senior fellowship program.

Selection Criteria:

  • The applications made by the candidates are reviewed by an external selection committee.
  • The selection committee is composed of scholars in the history of art and related disciplines. Outside readers may also assist in evaluating the proposals.

Value of award:

  • Senior fellows receive $50,000 for the academic year. This may be paid directly to the fellow or through their institution.
  • Awards for a single academic term are prorated.
  • Senior fellows receive an allowance for travel to a scholarly conference.
  • Senior fellows will receive an office in the National Gallery’s East Building as well as housing, as available.
