The scholarship program was started in 2016. The Beatrice Ratcliffe Charitable Trust left money for scholarships to the University of Auckland's School of Music, thanks to a bequest from Richard Guy Ratcliffe. The scholarship's primary goal is to support and encourage students doing postgraduate work at the School of Music.

Eligibility for Beatrice Ratcliffe Postgraduate Scholarship in Music:

Be enrolled, or enrolling, in a postgraduate Music programme at the University of Auckland.
Be studying one of the following programmes:
- Bachelor of Music Honours
- Postgraduate Diploma in Music
- Master of Music
- Doctor of Music
- Doctor of Musical Arts
- Doctor of Philosophy in Music
Have a Grade Point Average or Grade Point Equivalent of at least 6.00 in the qualifying programme.
Māori or Pacific applicants may be eligible with a minimum GPA or GPE of 5.50.
Demonstrate academic merit and potential for success in Music.
Meet the University’s enrolment and scholarship regulations.
