The Heinrich Böll Foundation grants scholarships to both domestic and international students in compliance with directives from the Foreign Office (Auswärtiges Amt) and the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). Scholarships are given out for the whole academic year.
Eligibility for Heinrich Böll Foundation - Master's Scholarships in Germany:
- The candidates applying for the Master's Scholarship for must be Germans, foreign students with non-German citizenship.
- All students pursuing their first degree are eligible to apply before the first semester and up until and including the third semester.
- German master's degree candidates, including both German citizens and international students; The application needs to be sent six months before the commencement of your study;
- German students (both domestic and international) pursuing their first degree under the "Diversity of Media, Different" study scholarship program (journalism or specialized courses); Application accepted from the beginning of the first semester through the third semester;
- Regardless of their semester of study, refugees who wish to begin or continue a first degree, master's degree, diploma, or state examination course in Germany are eligible to apply;
- foreign students ("Bildungsausländer*innen") enrolled in the diploma/state examination main course in Germany before beginning the master's program; Before the commencement of the primary course or the Master's degree, applications are accepted;
- Applications are open to students at all state-recognized universities in all subject areas.
- If at all feasible, the certificate of enrollment—or at the very least, verification of university admission—must be sent with the application, or it must be presented as soon as possible before the selection interview in the third stage of the selection process.

- Candidates should submit their data and CVs.
- The motivation statement should be submitted which should include why the candidates are applying to the Heinrich Böll Foundation.
- Applicants of the Master's Scholarship For Non-EU Nationals, Heinrich Böll Foundation are also asked to submit a motivation for studying their chosen subject.
- An outline of your and your main areas of interest, social commitments, and political interests.
Selection criteria:
- Candidates are selected based on the written statement provided.
- Applicants with good school or college/university academic record are preferred.
- The candidates who express social commitment and political interest are considered.
- Applicants should also submit convincing reasons for applying to the Heinrich Böll Foundation.
Value of the Scholarships:
Germans/Foreign students educated in Germany: varies based on own assets or earnings, parental income, or both, similar to the German BAföG: maximum of €812 plus a €300 monthly study costs allowance; maybe plus family, child care, health insurance, or something comparable.
EU nationals/Students not educated in Germany: varies based on own assets or earnings, parental income, or both, similar to the German BAföG: maximum of €812 plus a €300 monthly study costs allowance; maybe plus family, child care, health insurance, or something comparable.
