SMART Scholars Programme For Postdoctoral Research is to encourage Ph.D graduates to take part in in the Singapore-MIT Alliance for Research and Technology (SMART) Centre.

Eligibility

  • Ph.D. graduates are eligible to take up scholarship programmes.
  • Applicants interested in teaching can participate in a joint post-doc programme.
  • SMART Scholars Programme for Postdoctoral Research are open to a minimum of three years postdoctoral experience, provided they obtain their doctoral degree.

Documents Required

  • The applicants of SMART Scholars Programme for Postdoctoral Research should submit a CV (limited to two pages).
  • Minimum three copies of papers which represent your finest work.
  • A brief description of the research topic 
  • A write up of minimum two pages on technical approach, background/context, and anticipated results.
  • Specify the SMART Interdisciplinary Research Group (IRG)
  • Describe as to why you want to do your research at SMART.
  • Write on how the research study will benefit from being carried out in Singapore.
  • How it can help promote collaboration between SMART faculty members, the Nanyang Technological University (NTU) and the National University of Singapore (NUS).
  • Describe long-term career goals.
  • Future plans for any collaborative activities (no more than ½ page).
  • Prepare three professional recommendation letters. 
  • One from a doctoral supervisor and the other two from any experienced individual.

Singapore-MIT Alliance (SMA) was founded in 1998 as an initiative to develop research talents who can contribute locally to the economy. Born out of a collaboration between the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the National University of Singapore and the Nanyang Technological University, it currently offers five postgraduate programs. The programs are: Computational Engineering (CE) Computation and Systems Biology (CSB) Manufacturing Systems and Technology (MST)[1] Advanced Materials for Micro- and Nano- Systems (AMM&NS) Chemical and Pharmaceutical Engineering (CPE) There are three pathways of students enrolled in this program: Dual Masters, Master-PhD and direct PhD. Students admitted to the dual Masters or Master-PhD track will be conferred an MIT Master's degree in addition to an NUS degree. Currently SMA admits approximately 100-120 students per year for all 5 programs. All students are awarded the SMA fellowship which provides all tuition fees at MIT and NUS and living allowance, travel grants. Student seeking admission to the dual Masters or Master-PhD programs must satisfied the requirements of both MIT and NUS independently and separately. The admission process is decentralized, admission decisions to MIT and NUS are made separately while the award of SMA fellowship is solely determined by SMA office in Singapore. After the dual masters the student can proceed to do an NUS/NTU PhD by passing a PhD qualifying examination without having to apply for admission again.
