The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade(MFAT), New Zealand is offering New Zealand Commonwealth Postgraduate Scholarships, 2017 for qualified Sri Lankans to pursue advanced courses and also take up research.

Eligibility criteria:

  • Candidates must be citizens of Sri Lanka.
  • Applicants of must not hold citizenship or permanent residence status of New Zealand or Australia or other developing countries except those countries that do not issue passports and they have a New Zealand passport.
  • Candidates must neither be married or engaged to those who is eligible to have a citizenship or permanent residence status of New Zealand or Australia or other developing countries except those countries that do not issue passports and they have a New Zealand passport.
  • Candidates must be under 38 years of age as on  17.03.2017. 
  • A Bachelor's degree with First or Second Class Upper Division in a relevant field of study is required.
  • Students applying for Ph.D. must hold a Master's degree from a recognizes university.
  • Applicants must be highly proficient in English and will be evidenced by IELTS or TOEFL results that are not older than 2 years at the time of application.
  • Candidates must be employees in Public Sector, University, State Corporation or a Statutory Body except the military.
  • Applicants of doctoral study must submit an evidence of support from a prospective supervisor from one of the eligible universities.
  • Applicants of must not be in receipt of other scholarships.
  • Candidates currently receiving or those who have held New Zealand or Australian Government scholarship in the 24 months preceding the scholarship start date of the scholarship.
  • Applicants must not be studying full-time at a post-secondary level.
  • Candidates must not have a qualification at the same level as the proposed study must be of a level higher than those that are already received.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT) is the public service department of New Zealand charged with advising the government on foreign and trade policy and promoting New Zealand's interests in trade and international relations.

The ministry represents New Zealand interests to other governments, including at the United Nations, APEC, TPPA and the WTO. It takes an active role in the Asia-Pacific region, and has been involved in regional security initiatives such as the RAMSI intervention in the Solomon Islands, and negotiating and implementing a peace agreement in Bougainville. It is active in developing export opportunities for local companies, and in 2008 negotiated a free trade agreement with China.

It used to sponsor the Centre for Strategic Studies New Zealand in conjunction with other NZ Government ministries, though the Centre is now part of Victoria University of Wellington.
