  • The Nieman-Berkman Klein Fellowship in Journalism Innovation is open to candidates of all nationalities.
  • Applicants must remain in residence in the Cambridge area.
  • Candidates for Nieman Fellowships, including freelancers, must be working journalists.
  • He/She must have at least five years of full-time media experience. 
  • There is no age restriction for the Nieman-Berkman Klein Fellowship.
  • Academic prerequisites, and a college degree are not required.
  • Selected candidates must agree in writing to honor all leave stipulations made with their employers; 
  • Candidates are required to participate in all Nieman Foundation programs.
  • Must refrain from professional work during the fellowship year, except as approved by the Nieman curator.
  • Applicants must complete work in a minimum of one course per semester.
  • He/She must honor commitments made to faculty as a condition of auditing a class.
  • Applicants of Nieman-Berkman Klein Fellowship In Journalism Innovation must be proficient in both written and spoken English.


  • Candidates who work in public relations or at organizations whose primary business is not the media are not eligible to apply.
