About this course

The PhD program aims to train qualified PhD students who can independently conduct advanced-level research projects, possess both broad knowledge in modern life science and in-depth knowledge in specialized areas, and contribute original knowledge to the life science field by publishing their findings in peer-reviewed international journals. The program usually takes four to five years of full-time study to complete. Students are expected to conduct thesis research, undertake coursework, attend and present research seminars. They must also pass a qualifying examination set by the Division. Submission and successful defense of a thesis is required.

Admission Requirements

Prior Educational Background 

  • For admission to the MPhil/PhD program, students must possess a good first degree or a Master's degree from a recognized university or an approved institution. An applicant's undergraduate background is not a precondition for admission. Students with a solid quantitative background and commitment to academic study and research are encouraged to apply. 

The GRE and the TOFEL Requirements 

  • On top of their academic performance, an applicant must demonstrate his/her capability for graduate studies by obtaining a satisfactory score in the Graduate Record Examinations (GRE, score around 1200) or other equivalent means. 
  • For applicants attended educational institutions where the medium of instruction was not English and whose first language is not English, a satisfactory score in the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOFEL) is required.
